Tips on selecting good photographs for portraits
*choose photos that are clear and sharp *outdoor shots in soft, natural light (overcast or partly sunny) are usually best *photos taken with a flash on a camera are generally not suitable *take photos at subjects eye level; if the child is playing on the ground, get down with them to take the picture *the size of the face (hairline to chin) should be at least 1.5 inches *make sure that the whites of the eyes are clearly showing *choose clothing that is simple in design which will not later look dated; avoid garish colors or loud prints *a pleasant look (slight smile) or no smile at all is best; big grins with lots of teeth showing may look fine in a snapshot, but won’t wear very well in a painted portrait *if you are having a hard time trying to decide which photo will best translate into a painted portrait, send me several and I will help to select the best one for painting
